Story

Mediahuis needed a way to deliver modern, native news apps without building everything from scratch, Cue App offered a scalable solution. I joined the project in its early stages when only four brands was live. Over time, we expanded the platform to power apps for 16 publications, each customized to their brand while sharing a common infrastructure.
Stack

Cue App was built using Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, and Kotlin for cross-platform business logic. MVVM, Combine, Swift Concurrency, and modular Swift Packages. It integrated VoiceOver, Dynamic Type, authentication, and remote notifications. Analytics and data tracking were managed through Firebase, Google Analytics, and custom SDKs.
Process

Joining earlier meant contributing to new features while helping onboard new brands efficiently. I modernized interfaces by leading the transition from UIKit to SwiftUI and also contributed to the Kotlin codebase. I also focused on improving accessibility, integrating analytics, and refining workflows to support scaling from four app to sixteen.
Outcome

By 2025, Cue App powered 16 live apps for leading European media brands, reaching over 40 million readers and generating 900 million monthly page views through De Telegraaf alone. The platform grew into a reliable, scalable solution trusted by top publishers, with a modernized codebase and a consistent, high-quality user experience.

Most apps include a dedicated digital newspaper section powered by Twipe's SDK from Leuven, Belgium. This offers more than just a PDF users can read the paper in an interactive, electronic format or follow links directly to articles.

It provides a familiar experience for readers used to physical newspapers while leveraging digital features. The integration ensures a smooth, accessible way to enjoy newspapers inside the app.

Listen anytime, anywhere.

The platform supports seamless podcast playback across devices, letting users listen while on the move or multitasking. Multiple brands use this feature to deliver rich audio content directly within the app.

Many brands feature dedicated sports pages with tailored layouts and sublevel navigation. Readers can easily follow their favorite teams, leagues, or sports topics in one place. These sections offer flexible designs and curated content, creating a focused, fan-friendly experience.
